Presence & Absence II
“Every painted image of something is also about the absence of the real thing. All painting is about the presence of absence.” - John Berger.
My work is inspired by past histories of people and places, and often incorporates reclaimed materials and found or discarded objects, including photographs. My current practice mainly consists of a reconstruction of these histories and explores how objects trigger memories and emotional responses. It is this aspect that gives my work its subjectivity. The various histories of my subject matter are revitalized and re-presented; their presence is felt all the more strongly through a prevailing sense of absence.
Geraldine Jackman graduated from the Limerick School of Art and Design with an Honours BA Degree in Fine Art Painting in June 2010. Her recent solo exhibtiions have included the South Tipperary Arts Centre, Clonmel, in January 2011, and Birr Theatre and Arts Centre in September 2011. She was selected to participate in the group exhibition ‘Irish Wave 3’ in March/April 2012 in Beijing, China. She lives in Golden, Co. Tipperary and has work in private collections in Ireland, the UK, France and Australia.
