Artist Statement

The visual environment induces our emotional response - Peter Doig

The works shown here have been inspired by and focus on places encumbered with dereliction and features of the material environment. I create my work using reclaimed materials and found or discarded objects, including photographs. The objects and photographs from which I work suggest a vanished period, nostalgia, a moment that is now gone. I am attracted to the elusive and mysterious nature of these objects, the deeply rooted emotional resonance inherent in these pieces.
There is an element of memory in these works, focusing on the personal and shared sense of history attached to these objects and photographs. They seem to evoke a moment rooted in the past but are presented very much in the here and now, somewhat ambiguous but nonetheless evocative.
The process is an important part of my practice, and focuses on the use of different materials such as wax, latex, plaster and resin. The nature of these materials in their liquid state is similar to paint. Like paint the composition of the materials used in creating these works capture the trace of the human touch.
