Presence & Absence II - The Courthouse Arts Centre, Tinahely, Co. Wicklow

Presence & Absence II

“Every painted image of something is also about the absence of the real thing. All painting is about the presence of absence.” - John Berger.

My work is inspired by past histories of people and places, and often incorporates reclaimed materials and found or discarded objects, including photographs. My current practice mainly consists of a reconstruction of these histories and explores how objects trigger memories and emotional responses. It is this aspect that gives my work its subjectivity. The various histories of my subject matter are revitalized and re-presented; their presence is felt all the more strongly through a prevailing sense of absence.

Geraldine Jackman graduated from the Limerick School of Art and Design with an Honours BA Degree in Fine Art Painting in June 2010. Her recent solo exhibtiions have included the South Tipperary Arts Centre, Clonmel, in January 2011, and Birr Theatre and Arts Centre in September 2011. She was selected to participate in the group exhibition ‘Irish Wave 3’ in March/April 2012 in Beijing, China. She lives in Golden, Co. Tipperary and has work in private collections in Ireland, the UK, France and Australia.

'INTIMATE REVOLUTION: DISCOURSE ON DISAPPOINTMENT'

Announcing the preview openings of: 'INTIMATE REVOLUTION: DISCOURSE ON DISAPPOINTMENT' at Siemens Art Space, 798 Beijing, China, on International Women's Day Thursday 8 March from 4-6pm. Exhibition runs until 22 March.

IRISH WAVE 2012 will be a significant step towards the creation of a visually iconic Irish identity and the promotion of women practitioners in international practice.

This exhibitions is part of IRISH WAVE 2012, the Irish Festival Beijing and is supported by Culture Ireland, Crafts Council of Ireland, Cork Institute of Technology, Cork City Council, National Sculpture Factory, Irish Embassy, Beijing, Irish Museum of Contemporary Art and the Irish Centre Shanghai, China.

The theme of ‘Intimate Revolution: Discourse on Disappointment’ relates specifically to what happens to women at times of revolution and how in the aftermath of social upheaval, all too often the human rights of women are sacrificed on the altar of expediency. The artworks engage with the theme in diverse ways and from diverse perspectives, social, historical, political. The focus of the exhibition is the convergence of aesthetics by artists from opposite sides of the world, whether this is a demonstration of the global zeitgeist or of underlying visual synergy in human beings will be explored with vigour.
